In his research, he seeks algorithms that make computational systems more adaptable to how people interact with them, using concepts of natural interaction and artificial intelligence. Additionally, he investigates how digital games and gamification can be used in classrooms and informal learning to support the teaching of conventional and social skills in adults and children. Since 1998, he has participated in over twenty European and Greek funded Research and Development projects, with notable examples being the Humaine Network of Excellence, where he directed research activities in modeling and recognizing emotions, the CALLAS project (Area Leader in emotional computing applications, design award from Intel at the Ultrabook competition), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/siren.project\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/siren.project\">FP7 TeL Siren <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/siren.project\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/siren.project\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">project<\/a> (Technical Manager, the project was voted Best Learning Game in Europe in 2013 by the Games and Learning Alliance), the <a href=\"https:\/\/iread-project.eu\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/iread-project.eu\/\">H2020 iRead <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/iread-project.eu\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/iread-project.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">project<\/a>, which produced Navigo, the winner of the 2018 GALA Serious Games competition, and the H2020 ECoWeB project, which produces content and personalized applications for emotional health and the prevention of mental health-related issues in teenagers and young adults.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Kostas Karpouzis is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication, Media, and Culture.
